Module 1:

Threading the Elna 970 Machine

Colorful Sewing Thread

After completing this module, students will be able to thread the Elna 970 embroidery machine.

Objectives:

  • Students will learn steps to thread the Elna 970 embroidery machine.

Students will need to know how to thread the Elna 970 for the following reasons:

  •  machine runs out of thread

  • color change

  • thread break and the thread pulls out of the
    threading path

Let's get started!
Step 1:
Watch the video, below, about how to thread a Janome MB4 embroidery machine which is similar to an Elna 970 embroidery machine.

Step 2:
Now it's your turn!  Rewatch the video next to the Elna 970.  Find all of the parts of the machine mentioned in the video.  When you feel comfortable finding all of the parts, then try it yourself - thread needle one.  Use the video for reference and stop/reverse the video as needed to help you along.

DO

Step 3:
Using the attached pages (pdf) from the instructional manual, thread the remaining six needles.  (You can also use the video for reference when needed.)

Step 4:
Evaluation
After you have practiced several times at threading each needle, you will need to submit your final threading as evidence that you have threaded the machine correctly.
To do this:
  1. Use the rubric (pdf), below, as a reference to find the evaluated areas of the machine.
  2. Using the Elna 970 Instructional Manual, pages 18-20 to help guide you, take a picture of each of the following areas of needle one:
    • thread guide bar
    • pre-tension control
    • guide plate
    • take-up lever
    • lower guide plate
    • needle bar thread guide
    • needle
    • tension control discs
  3. Make sure pictures are clear and show each area and thread path.
  4. Rename the images with the corresponding area; adding numbers if there is more than one picture of an area.
    • Example:  needle; needle-1; needle-2
  5. Email the images to your instructor.
  6. If the images are too large to send through email:
    • Resize the images to approximately 640 x 480 pixels.

EVALUATE

Congratulations!  You're finished with Module 1 and have mastered how to thread the Elna 970 embroidery machine.
In the next module, you will learn how to tie a knot for a thread color change.
